ServerIron ADX NAT64 Configuration Guide 3
53-1002444-02
NAT64 and NAT46 implementation details
1
DRAFT: BROCADE CONFIDENTIAL
Requirements for stateless NAT46 configurations
The ServerIron ADX must be configured as a NAT46 gateway. The NAT46 gateway receives IPv4
packets whose destination IPv4 address is mapped to an internal IPv6 resource. It then translates
the IPv4 address to an IPv6 address using the IPv4-IPv6 mapping table information. Return
packets from the IPv6 resource are then mapped back to the client’s IPv4 address. NAT46 is
stateless, meaning that the NAT46 device does not keep track of the connections between the IPv4
client and the IPv6 resource.
Protocol support
The Foundry implementation of NAT64 and NAT46 supports the following protocols:
Generic Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
Generic User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
HTTP Secure (HTTPS)
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
NOTE
TFTP is not supported with NAT64.
NAT64 ICMPv6 to ICMPv4 message handling
NAT64 ICMP packet handling allows ICMPv6 messages to be translated to the corresponding
ICMPv4 messages on the IPv4 side, and ICMPv4 messages from the IPv4 side to be translated to
the corresponding ICMPv6 messages on the IPv6 side.
Table 1 shows how ICMPv6 messages are translated to ICMPv4 messages.
