ServerIron ADX NAT64 Configuration Guide 9
53-1002444-02
Basic stateful NAT64 configuration
2
DRAFT: BROCADE CONFIDENTIAL
5. The NAT64 gateway also dynamically selects an IPv4 address (192.0.2.1) from the IPv4 NAT
address pool (192.0.2.1–192.0.2.10) and uses that address as the source address for the
packet that is sent to the IPv4 resource.
In a stateful configuration, the NAT64 gateway keeps track of all its connections.
6. When a return packet destined for the IPv6 client arrives at the NAT64 gateway, the NAT64
gateway translates that packet’s IPv4 destination address (192.0.2.1) to the client’s IPv6
address (2001:db8:ccc::1) and the IPv4 resource’s source address (100.1.1.1) to the
synthesized IPv6 address (2001:db8:80::100.1.1.1).
Figure 3 illustrates stateful NAT64 translation.

NOTE
If the ServerIron ADX receives an IPv6 packet that contains a protocol other than TCP, UDP, or
ICMPv6 in the last Next Header field of the IPv6 header, then the packet is discarded silently.
Basic stateful NAT64 configuration
The steps required for basic stateful NAT64 configuration include the following:
“Configuring stateful IPv6 prefixes” on page 9
“Configuring basic IPv4 NAT address pools” on page 10
Advanced configuration options are described later in the chapter.
NOTE
If you are configuring NAT64 on a system that has had a previous SLB configuration, refer to
“Installing NAT64 on a previously configured ServerIron ADX” on page 6.
Configuring stateful IPv6 prefixes
In a stateful NAT64 configuration, the DNS64 server uses an IPv6 prefix to create a synthesized
IPv6 address which represents an IPv4 resource to the IPv6 network. This synthesized IPv6
address consists of two parts: an IPv6 prefix and the IPv4 address of an IPv4 resource.
