Overview of NAT64 and NAT46
The industry faces a challenging transition while it moves from its current IPv4-capable routers,
switches, servers, and applications to IPv6-ready devices. Service providers—whether they are
providing content, hosting services, or Internet access—cannot add or accommodate new
customers unless their content is equally accessible to both IPv4 and IPv6 users.
The ServerIron ADX supports both current IPv4 customers and offers a seamless experience to
users that access IPv4 Internet services through new IPv6-only networks in three simple and cost
effective ways: stateful NAT64 gateway, stateless NAT64 gateway, and a stateless NAT46 gateway.
Stateful NAT64 translation
NAT64 capabilities of Brocade ServerIron ADX enable organizations to bring new IPv6 customers
onboard while utilizing their existing IPv4-based infrastructures.
In a stateful NAT64 configuration, a ServerIron ADX configured as a NAT64 gateway enables
IPv6-only clients to communicate with IPv4 resources by way of address and packet translation.
This translation operation is performed on the NAT64 gateway using stateful sessions.
NAT64 is transparent to end users, meaning that IPv6-only clients can access IPv4 resources
seamlessly. NAT64 translation does not require any change on CPE devices at the client end.
NAT64 requires the IPv6 client address be replaced by an IPv4 address while communicating
with the IPv4 network and resources. IPv4 addresses are configured on the ServerIron ADX.
Stateful NAT64 maps multiple IPv6 clients to each of these IPv4 addresses using a technique
similar to NAT-PT. The translation operation requires knowledge of the IPv6-IPv4 address and
port mapping and this is maintained using stateful sessions.
Stateless NAT64 translation
Stateless NAT64 enables IPv6-only clients to communicate with IPv4-only hosts similar to stateful
NAT64. However, unlike stateful NAT64, it requires a one-to-one mapping between the IPv6 and the
IPv4 address of clients. In effect, stateless NAT64 does not require the creation of flow sessions
because an IPv4 address is allocated for each IPv6 address and there is no dynamic mapping of
IPv4 addresses to IPv6 addresses.
