44 ServerIron ADX NAT64 Configuration Guide
53-1002444-02
Stateless NAT46 overview
4
DRAFT: BROCADE CONFIDENTIAL
The ServerIron ADX is configured as a stateless NAT46 gateway. For an IPv4 host, the NAT46
gateway generates the IPv6 source address by concatenating the IPv6 prefix to the IPv4 source
address. The IPv6 destination address is obtained from the IPv4-IPv6 mapping table using the IPv4
destination address.
Two key components must be configured on the NAT46 gateway for it to enable communication
between IPv4 clients and IPv6 resources.
IPv6 prefix: The stateless NAT46 gateway is also configured with an IPv6 prefix that it
concatenates to an IPv4 source address to create an IPv6 source address on the NAT46
gateway for each of the IPv4 clients to the IPv6 resources. The IPv6 prefix defined on this
NAT46 gateway is 2001:db8:64::/96.
IPv4-IPv6 mapping table: The mapping table defines a one-to-one relationship between an
IPv4 address and an IPv6 address. This table can be defined manually or generated
dynamically. Dynamically generated mapping tables can be created in real-time or prefetched.
Operation of stateless NAT46
The following steps describe the operation of stateless NAT46 translation for the environment
shown in Figure 12.
1. In the example shown in Figure 13, the IPv4 client sends a query to the DNS server for the IPv4
address of the resource “www.brocadetest.com” and the DNS server responds with the IPv4
address (200.1.1.1).
The DNS server is configured to respond to a query from the IPv4 client with an IPv4 address.

2. The request packet is then sent to the NAT46 gateway using the IPv4 address (200.1.1.1) that
was obtained from the DNS server for “brocadetest.com” as the destination IP (DIP) address.
3. The NAT46 gateway uses its mapping table to translate the IPv4 DIP (200.1.1.1) into the IPv6
address (2001:db8:80::80) of the IPv6 server that hosts “brocadetest.com”.
The mapping table used for this translation can be populated statically or dynamically (by way
of a real-time DNS query or prefetched DNS query). For more information, refer to “Populating
the NAT46 mapping table” on page 45.
4. The NAT46 gateway creates a synthesized IPv6 source IP (SIP) address for the packet by
concatenating the IPv6 prefix to the IPv4 address of the IPv6 resource.
In this example, the IPv6 prefix (2001:db8:64::) is combined with the IPv4 address (192.0.2.1)
to create the IPv6 source address (2001:db8:64::192.0.2.1) for the packet forwarded to the
IPv6 resource.
