28 ServerIron ADX NAT64 Configuration Guide
53-1002444-02
Stateless NAT64 overview
3
DRAFT: BROCADE CONFIDENTIAL
The DNS64 server provides the IPv6 client with a synthesized IPv6 address which enables the IPv6
client to reach the IPv4 resource. The synthesized IPv6 address consists of the NAT64 IPv6 prefix
concatenated to the IPv4 destination address of the IPv4 resource and represents that IPv4
resource to the IPv6 network.
The ServerIron ADX is configured as a stateless NAT64 gateway. The NAT64 gateway strips the IPv6
prefix from the synthesized destination address and forwards the packet to the resource using an
IPv4 address obtained from the IPv4-IPv6 mapping table as the source address.
A ServerIron ADX configured for stateless NAT64 translation requires the following components:
DNS64 server: This component (not supplied by Brocade) is responsible for providing the IPv6
clients with the IPv6 addresses defined for IPv4 resources that the client wants to utilize. The
DNS64 server provides the IPv6 client with a synthesized IPv6 address that enables the client
to reach IPv4 resources. The synthesized IPv6 address consists of the NAT64 IPv6 prefix
concatenated to the IPv4 destination address of the IPv4 resource and represents the IPv4
resource to the IPv6 network.
NAT64 gateway: This component is installed on a ServerIron ADX. The NAT64 gateway is
reached by the IPv6 client using an IPv6 address supplied to it by the DNS server. A mapping
table translates IPv6 and IPv4 addresses. The mapping table can be populated statically or
dynamically (by way of a real-time DNS query or prefetched DNS query).
IPv6 prefix: An IPv6 prefix must be configured on the NAT64 gateway. The stateless NAT64
gateway concatenates the IPv6 prefix to the IPv4 source address of the IPv4 resource to create
a synthesized IPv6 address that represents the IPv4 resource to the IPv6 network.
IPv4-IPv6 mapping table: The mapping table defines a one-to-one relationship between an
IPv4 address and an IPv6 address. This table can be defined manually or generated
dynamically. Dynamically generated mapping tables can be created in real-time or prefetched
from a DNS server. For dynamic mapping, you must configure a DNS server IP address on the
ServerIron ADX.
Operation of stateless NAT64
The following steps describe the operation of stateless NAT64 translation for the environment
shown in Figure 7.
1. In the example shown in Figure 8, the IPv6 client sends a query to the DNS64 server for the
IPv6 address of the resource “www.brocadetest.com”.
2. The DNS64 server responds to the client’s query with a synthesized IPv6 address
(2001:db8:64::192.0.2.1) that represents the IPv4 resource to the IPv6 network. Notice that
this synthesized IPv6 address is composed of a user-configured IPv6 prefix (2001:db8:64::)
and the IP address of the IPv4-only server (192.0.2.1).
