2 ServerIron ADX NAT64 Configuration Guide
53-1002444-02
NAT64 and NAT46 implementation details
1
DRAFT: BROCADE CONFIDENTIAL
The stateless NAT64 gateway generates an IPv4 source address for the IPv6 host from the
IPv4-IPv6 mapping table. The mapping table can be dynamically constructed using a DNS server or
manually configured. The IPv4 destination address is obtained by stripping away the IPv6 prefix
from the synthesized IPv6 destination address provided by the DNS64 server.
Stateless NAT46 translation
When configured as a stateless NAT46 gateway, the ServerIron ADX enables IPv4-only clients to
communicate with IPv6-only resources using address and packet translation. In a stateless NAT46
configuration, the ServerIron ADX uses a mapping table to match IPv4 request packets sent from
the IPv4 clients with the IPv6 destination address of the IPv6 resource. The mapping table can be
dynamically constructed using a DNS server or manually configured.
NAT46 translation is offered in stateless mode only.
NAT64 and NAT46 implementation details
This section describes the components required for a NAT64 or NAT46 implementation and
provides information that is common to the stateful NAT64 configuration described in Chapter 2,
“Stateful NAT64 Configuration”, the stateless NAT64 configuration described in Chapter 3,
“Stateless NAT64 Configuration”, and the stateless NAT46 configuration described in Chapter 4,
“Stateless NAT46 Configuration”.
NOTE
A ServerIron ADX configured as either a NAT64 gateway or a NAT46 gateway cannot be configured
for other ServerIron ADX features such as SLB, GSLB, TCS, FWLB, and so on. This guide describes
all features that can be enabled on the NAT64 and NAT46 gateway.
Requirements for all NAT64 and NAT46 configurations
The NAT64 mechanism is implemented on a ServerIron ADX that has (at least) two interfaces: an
IPv4 interface connected to the IPv4 network, and an IPv6 interface connected to the IPv6 network.
IPv6 must be enabled on the ServerIron ADX.
Requirements for stateful and stateless NAT64 configurations
The following components are required for stateful and stateless NAT64 gateway configurations:
The DNS64 resolver provides AAAA responses for any resource that has an IPv4 address but
not an IPv6 address. It generates the IPv6 address for the resource by concatenating a NAT64
prefix to its IPv4 address. When an IPv6 client queries DNS for the address of an IPv4-only
resource, it receives the IPv6 address generated by the DNS64 resolver. Because you can
optionally configure your DNS servers with these IPv6 addresses manually, the DNS64 resolver
is not required.
The NAT64 gateway receives the IPv6 packet whose destination IPv6 address was generated
by the DNS64 resolver. It then translates the destination IPv6 address to the IPv4 address
owned by the IPv4 resource. The IPv4 packet returned from the IPv4 resource is then mapped
back to the destination IPv6 address from the client's request.
