Stateless NAT46 dynamic mapping configuration
4
DRAFT: BROCADE CONFIDENTIAL
Stateless NAT46 dynamic mapping configuration
The stateless NAT46 gateway uses a mapping table to translate the IPv4 destination address that
the IPv4 network uses to identify the IPv6 resource into the actual IPv6 address of that resource.
This mapping table can be configured manually (using static mapping) or generated dynamically
(using real-time dynamic learning or prefetched dynamic learning). A maximum of 1024 entries is
supported in the mapping table.
In configurations using static mapping, all entries in the NAT46 gateway mapping table are
manually defined using the nat64 map command.
Dynamically generated mapping tables can be populated in real time by way of real-time dynamic
learning or pre-populated by way of prefetched dynamic learning. You must configure a DNS server
IP address on the ServerIron ADX to use dynamic mapping.
Real-time dynamic learning: If a packet is received at the NAT46 gateway with an IPv4
destination address within the range defined by the NAT46 IPv4 prefix and it does not contain
an entry in its mapping table for that IPv4 address, the gateway will send an IPv4 PTR query to
the DNS server to obtain the host name of the resource it is trying to reach. The NAT46 gateway
then sends a query for the host name to determine the corresponding IPv6 address. The
mapping defined by this operation is then entered into the mapping table of the NAT46
gateway.
Prefetched dynamic learning: The NAT46 gateway can be configured to periodically send IPv4
PTR queries to the DNS server to identify IPv6 address translations for each of the IPv4
destination addresses defined within the IPv4 prefix subnet. The NAT46gateway uses this
information to populate its mapping table.
Real-time NAT46 dynamic mapping configuration
Basic real-time NAT46 dynamic mapping configuration tasks include the following:
“Configuring NAT46 IPv6 prefixes with real-time dynamic learning” on page 52
“Configuring NAT46 IPv4 prefixes with real-time dynamic learning” on page 53
“Configuring NAT46 real-time dynamic learning” on page 53
Advanced real-time NAT46 dynamic mapping configuration tasks include “Configuring NAT46
hold-off intervals for DNS discoveries” on page 53.
Configuring NAT46 IPv6 prefixes with real-time dynamic learning
The NAT46 gateway uses a NAT46 IPv6 prefix to create a synthesized IPv6 source address on the
NAT46 gateway for each of the IPv4 clients. The synthesized IPv6 address is used to represent the
IPv4 clients to the IPv6 network.
Use the nat64 ipv6-prefix command to specify the IPv6 prefix. Enter a command such as the
following:
ServerIron ADX(config)# nat64 ipv6-prefix 2001:db8:8000::0/96 stateless
Syntax: [no] nat64 ipv6-prefix <prefix/length> stateless
The <prefix/length> variable specifies the NAT46 IPv6 prefix that will be used by the ServerIron
ADX when operating as a NAT46 gateway. Currently, the only supported prefix length is 96.
